Déjà Vu Card #16: Selfies

There is something I detest about selfies. I don’t know the reason people take their own pictures. And at the same time, people all over the planet seem to be doing the same thing. I have no idea why one should attempt such narcissistic behavior. Call me an iconoclast if you want to, but I choose not to follow the societal norms of narcissism. Casual selfies are the symbolic manifestation of all the neediness that craves the limelight. Many a times, selfies are a way to avenge someone, especially someone with whom you were once romantically and/or sexually involved. Hence originated the concept of nude selfies.

There are many logical reasons to avoid a selfie. One of the chief reasons is when you take a selfie and post it on some social networking site; you are seeking the attention of people. In other words, selfies prove your desperation for the spotlight. Why do you want to be noticed? Your work can speak for itself. If all you want is sexual attention, you can always have plenty of it if you decide to work on yourself, your conversation skills and your sense of humor. But instead of working on yourself, you choose to indulge in a public display of your body. I am against selfies for this reason. It is okay to enjoy your own pictures. Studies have shown when someone posts a selfie on a social networking site or a blog, it sends a wrong message that all they have to offer is their body.

It is not wrong to feel the need of appreciation. It also normal to take a selfie when no one else is there to take your photo to savor an extraordinary moment for example, you are at the top of the Everest or you are at one of the poles of our planet or when you are skydiving solo or if you are Peter Parker! It is justifiable.

Seems logical to me. No problem with this one.

This is ok too.

OK! No arguments here!

But casual selfies by no means seem logical to me.

So, instead of following a popular culture of selfies think again if that moment is worth notable. If it is, then go for it! And please, in the name of all that is normal, avoid duck-face selfies as long as you can!
NOT OK. Duck-faces don't make sense!

This is not cool guys! Think for a second!
